Women empowerment has always been an essential factor amongst society. Thandi Mvata the founder of Doek on Fleek saw a need to establish the Doek on Fleek movement to bring women from all walks of life together to celebrate the important role women play in our society.

They are two women: one from a well-off family in Johannesburg, the other from a township in Port Elizabeth. In just two months, they’ve set the Internet on fire with one message: the doek.

The Doek on Fleek Picnic is a movement created to empower women. Women are encouraged to put on their head wraps and come enjoy a celebration by women for women. It takes place in a Garden type enevironment,

“The doeks are made by domestic abuse survivors in a shelter in Johannesburg. They write powerful message from their past experiences on each doek,” said Chimuka.
